Every brand is scored across 6 dimensions: pasture access (how much outdoor space the hens actually get), feed quality (organic, soy-free, conventional), certifications (third-party welfare audits), transparency (how much the company shares about their practices), egg quality (yolk color, nutrition, flavor), and price value (what you get for what you pay). Scores range from 1 to 10, with 10 being the best in that category.
Cage-free means hens aren't in cages, but they're still indoors in crowded barns with no outdoor access. Free-range means they have some access to the outdoors, but the outdoor area can be small and many hens never actually go outside. Pasture-raised (when certified) means each hen gets at least 108 square feet of outdoor space on rotating pasture. The difference in the eggs is visible: pasture-raised hens that actually eat bugs and grass produce eggs with deep orange yolks and significantly more omega-3s and vitamins.
